For Every Generation: Building a Healthier Future Through Immunization
story
Every year, vaccines protect hundreds of millions of people from serious illness. Vaccines have saved more than 154 million lives, which amounts to six lives every minute of every day for the last five decades.
This World Immunization Week, we’re looking at how vaccines provide a safe and proven method for protecting communities across generations. Through close collaboration with ministries of health and global partners, we are strengthening routine immunization services so that everyone at every age can receive the protection that vaccines provide.
Nearly 20 million infants are missing out on at least one vaccine each year, with over 14 million never receiving a single dose, primarily due to lack of access. JSI works to close this gap by strengthening the routine systems that reach the individuals and communities most in need, ensuring that life-saving products are available where and when they are needed.
Improving vaccine forecasting and supply planning: Through the Immunization Collaborative Supply Planning Strengthening (ICSPS) project, we build the capacity and agency of supply planning teams in the DRC, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Nigeria to implement evidence-based forecasting and supply planning (FSP) approaches. In one country, the FSP system identified 37 critical supply risks, representing 130 million doses, which prompted the government to rapidly execute mitigation strategies. Access our latest resource on essential key performance indicators for forecasting and supply planning.
Strengthening systems through people who deliver services: In India, the Rapid Immunization Skill Enhancement (RISE) project provides health workers with the opportunity to enhance their skills through cutting-edge, app-based e-learning on immunization. Co-funded with national and state governments, the program currently reaches over 150,000 health workers across eight states. Learn more about RISE or download the app.
Building on vaccination campaign momentum: In Mozambique, JSI supported the Ministry of Health through the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and with partners to build on “Big Catch-Up” momentum and reach more zero-dose and under-immunized children. The latest round in the campaign targeted 62 priority districts in four provinces, where we provided technical support for microplanning, training, supportive supervision, logistics, and monitoring and evaluation. Learn more about this work.
Accelerating introduction and coverage: Through the HPV Vaccine Acceleration Program Partners Initiative (HAPPI) Consortium, we support accelerated HPV vaccination coverage in low- and middle-income countries. Since 2023, HAPPI has supported successful submissions for over 46% of all applications submitted to Gavi for HPV new vaccine introduction or technical assistance. This work has resulted in over 34.1 million girls vaccinated in large geographies like Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. Learn more from HAPPI’s research around different vaccine delivery methods.
Immunization systems are often hampered by subnational data collection and analysis challenges, leaving many children undervaccinated and vulnerable. JSI applies a comprehensive, end-to-end approach to service delivery, using data to drive decision-making and supportive supervision to strengthen immunization systems at various levels.
Leveraging digital tools to leave no one behind: In Ethiopia, the transition from paper-based surveys to a digital supportive supervision tool has transformed how health officials identify gaps. By digitizing the Random Convenient Survey to collect data from more than 51,000 households, the Ministry of Health created a “single source of truth” that enabled digital microplanning across 759 health facilities and helped identify a 4.7% zero-dose rate. This shift ensures that remote communities are visible to the health system. Learn more about the digital transition.
Translating knowledge into action: The JSI-led Zero-Dose Learning Hub is translating localized research into concrete government action. In Nigeria, the introduction of accountability scorecards contributed to the release of over ₦2 billion in confirmed state-level immunization budgets. By embedding data into budgeting, governance, and service delivery systems, this work strengthens immunization performance for the long term. Access resources from the Zero-Dose Learning Hub.
Immunization is one of the most cost-effective and high-impact public health interventions in history. Today, vaccines protect people against more than 30 infectious diseases throughout their lives. From providing global guidance to delivering on-the-ground support, JSI is committed to ensuring every dose is delivered effectively so people can grow, thrive, and lead healthy lives for generations to come.
We strive to build lasting relationships to produce better health and education outcomes for all.
